Editor’s comment: Prof. Jim Thornton: Nearly one in five deaths of extremely preterm babies occurs after 28 days
Rates of death among babies born between 22 and 28 weeks are falling, and the proportion due to respiratory problems is also going down. However deaths due to necrotising enterocolitis are rising. Overall 40% of deaths occurred within 12 hours of birth, and 17% after 28 days.
