Long term trends in prevalence of neural tube defects in Europe: population based study

Editor's comment: Prof. Jim Thornton: Voluntary folic acid supplementation is not reducing neural tube defects
Despite widespread policies for folic acid supplementation in Europe, the prevalence of non-chromosomal neural tube defects did not fall between 1991 and 2011. These data suggest that supplement recommendations and voluntary food fortification have been ineffective and mandatory fortification of food staples with folic acid should be considered.
