The American College of Obstetricians and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine have released new joint guidelines for the management of first labours with the aim of reducing Caesarean deliveries


They recommend that prolonged latent phase of labour, of whatever duration, should not be an indication for Caesarean, and that the diagnosis of the active phase should not be made until 6 cm dilatation.
