EU approves 9 valent HPV vaccine

The European Medicines Agency has recommended approval for the new Gardasil 9 vaccine, active against nine types of human papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccine is already approved in the US. It adds five more HPV types (31, 33, 45, 52, and 58) to the four (6, 11, 16, and 18) currently covered by existing vaccines.

About 90% of cervical cancers are believed to be caused by the nine HPV types. The vaccine is indicated for girls and young women aged 9 through 26 years and for boys aged 9 through 15 years
