FDA discourages use of power morcellators for fibroids


Recent cases of dissemination of uterine myosarcomas in patients undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy for fibroids have led to wide debate. The US Federal Drugs Administration (FDA) has now issued advice discouraging the use of open (not confined to a bag) power morcellation. Power porcellation is the procedure most likely to cause the spread of small pieces of tumour throughout the abdomen.
