Geoffrey Chamberlain

10-November-2014

Professor Geoffrey “Bodger” Chamberlain died at the end of October. In 1994 he had co-authored, with his colleague Malcolm Pearce, a case report in the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology describing an ectopic pregnancy which had been transferred into the uterine cavity and survived! It made headlines round the world, but was fraudulent. The main culprit was Pearce, but Chamberlain, a larger than life character in British obstetrics, had accepted gift authorship and had too many conflicts of interest. He was forced to resign both as Editor-in-chief of BJOG and as President of the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. It was the first really high profile scientific fraud in the UK.
